Animal Justice accuses Marineland, federal government, of washing their hands of whales
An animal rights group accuses everyone involved in moving whales from Marineland to the US of simply washing their hands of the problem.
Animal Justice Executive Director Camille Labchuk tells us Marineland just wants to sell the land for profit, and the US aquariums just want breeding.
She says they tried for a Nova Scotia site. "But Marineland refused to play ball, and the feds just ignored the pleas to help the belugas. So, now we have 2 of them dead, and the rest due to live in a lifetime of captivity and more forced breeding."
She adds animal welfare services could have intervened for the whales.
She says it's obvious the federal government didn't do enough to protect the whales.
The only thing they can do is keep lobbying. "We've been urging the new aquariums, so the Shed Aquarium in Chicago, also Sea World and the others, to publicly commit to never breeding the belugas, and that would go a long way toward protecting the spirit of the laws that Canada passed."
