Andrea Horwath is calling on the Ford Government, to save the Forensic Pathology Unit in Hamilton.
The NDP Leader says Toronto will be handing all autopsies for Hamilton and Niagara starting this Sunday.
She says this will lead to a longer wait for autopsy results, which will hurt local families.
"The emotional toll on families is unthinkable. Today, when someone loses a child, the grieving process can’t really begin until the autopsy is done and the body is released back to the family. During that time, their home is cordoned off by police. Their life is turned upside down. And now, that awful wait will be longer while the body is sent to Toronto, put into the queue for autopsy, and arrangements are eventually made to send it back. I can’t imagine how that would compound that family’s pain."
Horwath says this also means local police forces will have to waste time travelling to and from Toronto during case work.
