Voters casting ballot in divisive mayoral race
India Walton, the Democratic nominee, is hoping to make history as the city’s first female mayor.
The 39 year old from the east side, gave birth to her first child at 14, then worked to put herself through nursing school before becoming an activist.
In a surprise move, Walton beat out incumbent Mayor Byron Brown for the Democratic nomination
But Brown isn’t out of the running.
He decided to defy the party and is running today as a write in candidate.
Voters will also cast ballots today for Erie County legislators, the county sheriff and comptroller as well as a justice of the Supreme Court.
