Port Colborne's mayor says carp has destroyed fishing and boating in US, can do the same to the Great Lakes
A warning from Port Colborne's mayor the future of the Great Lakes is in peril due to an invasive carp species from the US.
Bill Steele tells us the fish is from the Mississippi River area, and destroying fishing and boating as it moves north.
He adds it eats everything in its path. "They're also dangerous, because as boats go by it scares these things, and they can weigh anywhere from 40 to 80 pounds. They've been known to jump out of the water, it almost looks like they're flying. They've hit boat drivers and boat passengers, and some people have actually died."
He says American authorities want to build a damn to stop the fish in the Michigan/Illinois area, but they need the Illinois governor to sign.
"I think the worry from the governor is they're going to take all the costs, as for future repairs and replacement need to be done. So, we're urging, in our meetings with Senators and Congressman."
