Frank Campion says change is long overdue, he has no problem losing regional council seat
Further clarification from Welland's mayor on where he stands on the amalgamation issue, and that he has no problem losing a seat should the region dissolve.
In a statement released today, Frank Campion points out this whole discussion has been going on for over 30-years, repeatedly assessed through provincial studies, consultant reports, and independent analyses, yet no meaningful change has happened.
He notes the Berkley report from 2000 made it clear: the current system is overly complex, costly to taxpayers, and makes investment difficult.
The mayor adds his preference is the 4-city model, simply to eliminate the Niagara region, but, if there's another system without full amalgamation, that should be seriously considered.
He says any system that saves taxpayer money, and is more efficient, he's for it.
Meanwhile, St. Catharines city council is having a discussion tonight, the public invited to speak.
