City Nature Challenge takes place this weekend
The mayors of St. Catharines and Niagara Falls are involved in a friendly nature themed challenge.
Tomorrow through Monday, the two cities will take part in this year's City Nature Challenge.
Every year, communities across the globe take part in a weekend of biological surveying to help catalog native plants, species and animals in their cities.
Dave DeRocco of the Canadian Wildlife Federation says there are lots of reasons why residents who enjoy nature should take part.
"It's a great way to learn. It's a great way to turn a simple nature walk into a bit of citizen pride with a real purpose. All your observations actually go into an active database of biodiversity around the world. So it's a fun activity, but it's also purposeful."
To participate, you'll need to download the iNaturalist app and use it to log the pictures you take.
The results of the challenge will be announced on May 8th.
