Jennie Stevens says the jails are overcrowded, and the government needs to account for this
The condition of Ontario jails under scrutiny by NDP Shadow Solicitor General Jennie Stevens.
The St. Catharines MPP says it's time for Premier Doug Ford and Solicitor General Michael Kerzner to stop dodging questions, and take account for the jail system.
Pointing to crumbling jails, she says from the Maplehurst incident alone, accused murderers, armed robbers, human traffickers and sexual predators are released sooner due to government incompetence.
She says workers are overwhelmed in overcrowded facilities, leading to unsafe conditions for everyone.
However, the government says it's spending $3-billion over 10-years to add 2,500 more beds.
