MPP Wants to Support Caregivers

He did it back in 2024, and he's giving it another shot.

Niagara Falls NDP MPP Wayne Gates asking the government to support his caregiver benefit, which was debated in the Ontario legislature today.

He says there are roughly 4.2-million people who don't get paid for leaving jobs, or putting life on hold to take care of a loved one at home.

The Ontario Caregiver organization says people spend an average of $758 a month for caregiver expenses.

He says whether you're caring for an ailing parent, or child recovering from illness, this benefit will cover you, such as expenses for care.

He adds his idea has the support of all opposition parties before debate.

Newfoundland and Labrador, and PEI, have Caregiver Allowances, while Nova Scotia, Quebec and Manitoba have refundable tax credits.
