It's part of a 10 year plan, including sharing cost of a pond off Garner Road
Niagara Falls city council has voted to share the cost of storm water pond expansion with the developer of a new subdivision off Garner Road, near Lundy's Lane.
The pond already services the Edgewood Estates subdivision, which is in the same area.
Council was told during its Tuesday night meeting the price tag for taxpayers will be $277,770, and the developer will pay $128,410.
It was also revealed that night the city owns 25 ponds, 14 of which need attention.
Director of Municipal Services Erik Nichol explained why it's been decades since they were looked at. "Given that they're a little bit newer, they haven't traditionally been a requirement for us to maintain over the past few decades. However, with the 25 year approximate duration before they fill up, we are approaching a wave of storm water ponds that need to be cleaned up."
He adds it'll cost about $7-million over the next 10 years.
"Storm water management ponds are a relatively new asset. They are meant for the protection of the environment, they also make sure clean water is discharged and we don't have overflows of the banks of our natural watercourses," he says.
