The 2026 budget is being finalized, the mayor dropping rates proposed by city staff
The Mayor of Niagara Falls and city staff are working to finalize the 2026 budget, and get taxes lowered.
City staff offered Mayor Jim Diodati a 4.48% increase to the operating levy, and 3% increase to capital, but the mayor reduced those numbers to 2.93 and 2%.
That translates into a roughly $4/month increase for operating, and $3/month capital.
Ontario mayors have to present a draft budget by February 1st.
The city says cost is rising in three critical areas.... cyber security with an increase of $864,000, sidewalk repairs at $270,000, and storm sewer maintenance at $276,000.
