Niagara Catholic Wants Review Delayed

The board is asking Ontario government

The Niagara Catholic school board is joining other boards asking the Ontario government to delay board governance review.

Chair Danny Di Lorenzo says the government plan includes getting rid of elected trustees, replaced by paid supervisors over the board.

He adds everyone works hard, but understands change can be needed.  "Could use some re-vamping, but that's done with consultation and dialogue, and coming up with a better plan.  Looking at what's working and what's not working, not just deciding what's not working for some boards, and deciding to overhaul everything."

He says trustees play an important role being a voice for parents, and voting for trustees is important.

He points out not every board is causing problems, in fact, the premier applauded Niagara for good work.  "We need to manage the budget, make sure our multi-year strategic plan is being met, and we hire the director, and manage the director.  I think we do a good job doing that, we have a little bit of a surplus in our budget."
