Niagara EMS Chief Kevin Smith has accepted a position with British Columbia Emergency Health Services.
Niagara EMS Chief Kevin Smith is stepping down after nine years on the job.
Smith has announced he is leaving the Niagara Region to take a job with British Columbia Emergency Health Services.
He began his career as a paramedic after graduating from Niagara College in 1992.
In 1998, he received his Advanced Care Paramedic designation from the Michener Institute in Toronto.
In his role as Chief, Smith helped Niagara EMS transform to a Mobile Integrated Health service delivery model.
The structure includes over 450 advanced and primary care paramedics, emergency medical dispatchers, nurses, emergency planners, occupational therapists and administrative staff.
"Kevin Smith has been an absolute leader in Niagara, transforming our Emergency Medical Service to a dynamic mobile integrated health operation that is receiving global attention," says Dr. Mustafa Hirji. "Moreover, he has been a respected and trusted figure in our community."
His last day with Niagara EMS will be May 6th.
Niagara Region says it has started to search for his replacement.
