Community Land Trust of Niagara designed to hold land for home construction
Niagara Falls city council unanimously supporting a Community Land Trust of Niagara, a group dedicated to affordable housing.
Vice Chair Lori Beech telling the group it acquires land, and holds it, working to get homes built.
She points to rents averaging $1,500 a room, per month, or higher. "Absolutely not affordable, and some of you probably have children at home, that are adults, that should be on their own, but can't afford to. So, this affects not only just the most vulnerable and lower income of our community anymore, it's affecting everyone."
She says they're holding land on Crowther Avenue in Welland, waiting for construction.
She also explained the complicated housing industry. "Crisis, supportive, transitional... we have a whole bunch of subcategories in there now, that start at non-market, low-market, affordable housing, some of that housing is supportive."
She added strong partnerships between government and housing groups are vital.
