Niagara Health site being honoured for its use of blood
Niagara Health's St. Catharines site is being recognized for its use of blood.
Canadian Blood Services and Choosing Wisely Canada has named the site as a Using Blood Wisely Hospital.
The groups took part in a national campaign to challenge hospitals to reduce the amount of unnecessary red blood cell transfusions.
The Welland and Niagara Falls sites are also among the 78 Canadian hospitals to reach this benchmark.
"The Using Blood Wisely designation is a symbol of Niagara Health’s commitment to achieving and maintaining the highest levels of red blood cell stewardship," says Sonali Kohli, Niagara Health Vice President of Diagnostics and Chief Information Officer. "We are proud to be among a select group of hospitals making a significant difference to patients, donors and Canada’s blood supply. This is an example of the extraordinary caring Niagara Health provides to our community."
Officials say using blood conservatively keeps supplies sustainable and reduces the risk of side effects for patients.
