Budget increases greenlit to help maintain and upgrade infrastructure
The Niagara Region has greenlit budget increases for waste management and water and wastewater services.
An increase of 8.59 percent was approved for water and wastewater services, as well as a 5.5 percent hike for waste management.
Local municipalities will incorporate the new rates for water and wastewater service into resident water bills.
Officials say starting January 1st, 2024, the region will not be operationally and financially responsible for residential blue box processing and collection.
The region is in the process of selling its material recycling facility, and the transition will add moderate costs this year.
The average household in Niagara can expect to pay about $14.71 per month for waste services this year.
Next month, Niagara Regional Council will vote on the 2023 regional budget.
