Over $5-million has been recovered
Two 17-year old St. Catharines boys have been charged in relation to a massive auto theft ring.
In April of last year, police starting looking into the theft of a Lexus SUV in Niagara, and soon learned it was part of a southern Ontario wide crime ring, with estimated losses of $20-million.
Further investigation led police to searching a home in Hamilton last month, where they arrested 18-year old Nemr Alawad and 23-year old Frank Alawad, both of Hamilton.
Then, on May 14th, police searched homes in Mississauga and Oakville, where they arrested 5 more 16 and 17-year old boys.
Police say they've also recovered stolen vehicles in the Port of Montreal, bound for Africa.
At this point, police say 20-year old Ryan Ramayah Permauloo of North Dumfries, and 22-year old Mamadi Kaba of Quebec are wanted on multiple charges.
Police say Project Jack Links investigated the theft and attempted theft of over 112 vehicles across southern Ontario, most of them in Niagara, and that more arrests and recovery of stolen property is expected.
NRP Chief Bill Fordy says this shows the impact this crime is having on communities, but he also recognized and thanked detectives and officers for their work.
