NRP Help Bust Massive Auto Theft Ring

Police found roughly $12-million in stolen vehicles, arrested 20 people

Another massive auto theft ring that spanned internationally has been broken up by police, and Niagara Regional police were involved.

Provincial police say Project Chickadee began in August of 2023, after police recovered four stolen vehicles in the GTA.

They found evidence registered businesses around Toronto were used to ship vehicles to the Middle East and West Africa.

In October and November, the NRP helped other police forces search 25 locations from Quebec, through to Milton and Waterloo, and found:

  • 306 stolen vehicles, with a combined value of approximately $25 million
  • Three firearms
  • Various provincial licence plates
  • On-board diagnostic reader
  • Numerous key fobs and assorted vehicle keys
  • Vehicle shipping documentation
  • Other equipment including two forklifts and two tractor-trailer cabs
  • More than $190,000 CAD
  • More than $32,000 USD
  •  Electronic devices including cell phones, laptops and hard drives

They say 20 people were arrested, the youngest being 20-years old.
