Environment Canada confirms it could have something to do with the lingering fog
Niagara regional police and Environment Canada have an idea as to what possibly caused explosion sounds in Welland last night.
Police were called just after 9 to the Burgar Street park area, to reports of a loud noise that appeared to cover a 7km area. No fires or evidence of an explosion were found.
Police also searched the Harrison and Gladys Avenue area, where video footage was seen of a red/orange flash, followed by a boom, or explosion sound, just after 9pm.
Welland fire department, along with Welland Hydro, couldn't find anything.
However, Niagara police, along with Environment Canada, point out the lingering weather, with the fog, could be the culprit.
They say a side impact of low hanging, lingering weather, such as fog, is to keep loud noises, such as fireworks, contained to the ground, instead of being released naturally.
Meteorologist David Phillips says the sound waves can bounce off the fog, and stay within the surface area, instead of going further into space.
