Officers say a few current trends in Niagara include sextortion, ransomware and online scams.
You're advised to be careful with how much information you share on social media, and be cautious of friend requests from unknown people or multiple profiles using the same name as a known friend.
The NRP also warns that people with technical knowledge can exploit the information you post online, and suggests getting familiar with the security settings on your devices, as well as apps like Twitter and Facebook.
You're also urged not to provide information such as your address or financial details, and be skeptical of sellers asking for payment using gift cards or advance online or e-transfer payments.
