The move prompting an emergency response in Wainfleet.
NRP say Port Colborne uniform officers were called to the Lake Erie shoreline last night around 10:45 for a possible person in distress.
Officers along with Wainfleet Fire Services searched in the area of Lakeshore Road between Quarry Road and Bessey Road after a member of the public reported seeing a red flare go off and land abut 75 feet from shore.
A Canadian rescue aircraft in Trenton was also placed on standby.
After searching the area emergency personnel located a discharged marine flare.
An NRP drone also found no boats or persons in the water.
Police reminding the public marine flares should never be discharge near the water unless their is a real emergency.
Persons caught intentionally discharging a flare could be subject of an investigation under the Criminal Code or the Canada Shipping Act.
