The Conservative leader announced a "Jail Not Bail Act", after about 300 people showed up at the Welland courthouse last night
About 300 people gathered in front of the Church Street courthouse in Welland yesterday demanding changes to the Canadian justice system.
Inside the courthouse 25-year-old Daniel Senecal appeared virtually and informed the court he was changing his lawyer.
His next court appearance has been pushed back to next month.
He faces four charges including sexual assault on a person under 16 and assault/choking.
He was arrested after a Welland apartment was broken into and a three-year-old girl was sexually assaulted.
He had been released in March after serving two-and-a-half years for the sexual assault of a 12-year-old boy.
Earlier today, Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre spoke of this crime during an announcement for a "Jail Not Bail Act".
His party plans to introduce it this fall, but he says in terms of bail reform, we already have it under Liberal law.
He also mentioned a number of people released on bail, but who have only murdered following release.
As for the Welland case, he said as a father he is sickened by these stories, which are all avoidable.
