Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says his government is in the midst of formalizing a request to suspend the arrival of international students into Ontario.
Trudeau says the request was made by Premier Doug Ford, and no other provinces have made this demand.
Currently, international students are exempt from the COVID-19 travel regulations in Canada.
Students need to show a valid study permit or letter of introduction showing they were approved for a permit.
This comes after the province asked the federal government to implement a mandatory three day quarantine period at designated hotels for people crossing the border by land.
Currently, land travelers crossing the border need to take a COVID-19 test within 72 hours of arrival and prove a 14 day quarantine plan.
Travelers will also need to take a second COVID-19 test eight days after arrival.
On the other hand, those traveling by international flight need to test upon arrival, quarantine in a government-approved hotel for three days to await test results, then complete their 14 day quarantine elsewhere if the test comes back negative.
