Sabres dog named after play-by-play announcer Rick Jeanneret.
The Buffalo Sabres have a new four-legged friend.
Rick the Team Dog, who is named after the Sabres play-by-play announcer Rick Jeanneret, is an 8 month old Newfoundland rescued by the Niagara County SPCA.
The team paired up with WNY Heroes and their Pawsitive for Heroes program to make Rick a member of the Sabres family this hockey season.
At the moment, Rick is being trained to be a service dog for a Buffalo veteran, and the Buffalo Sabres Foundation is covering the cost of his training.
"We had talked for a long time about getting a team dog, but we wanted to make sure the dog served a greater purpose that could have a meaningful impact on our community," Sabres Vice President of Community Relations Rich Jureller said. "In partnering with the Pawsitive for Heroes program, we've found the perfect match for the team, the dog and the veteran."
During home games this season, Rick will greet fans at home games and community events.
Once he's paired up with a veteran, the dog and his owners will go through training together.
