The Mayor of St. Catharines has released a statement following reports of asbestos at the old GM site.
The group Coalition for a Better St. Catharines made the accusation in a letter released last week.
Sendzik says an asbestos removal program took place before any of the buildings on the property were demolished and the Ministry of the Environment is monitoring the site.
He also says the Ontario Street property has not been abandoned because it’s owned by an ownership group.
Sendzik says this means the city can only do so much without “incurring significant liability to the taxpayers of St. Catharines."
