Trash Team releases list of top polluting items
The University of Toronto’s Trash Team has unveiled a list of the top 10 plastic items found in Lake Ontario.
The garbage was collected in Seabins placed in the lake to collect trash.
Over a four month period researchers say the bins trapped the equivalent of about 3,400 plastic water bottles in volume.
The top 10 items include bottle caps, cigarette butts, food packaging, foam, stir sticks and balloons.
The group notes most of the trash is related to single use plastics.
