Applications now open for $500 one-time top-up to the Canada Housing Benefit
Low-income renters in Canada can now apply for a one-time top-up to the Canada Housing benefit.
Eligible recipients will receive a tax-free payment of $500.
Last month, a bill promising the rental boost and the first federal dental care benefit became law.
Families earning less than $35,000, or individuals making under $20,000 who pay at least 30 percent of their adjusted net income on rent are eligible.
To get the money, applicants need to confirm they meet the following requirements:
- Have filed their 2021 income tax and benefit return;
- Are at least 15 years of age as of Dec. 1, 2022;
- Are a resident in Canada for tax purposes in 2022;
- Have their principal residence in Canada as of Dec. 1, 2022;
- Have paid rent for their own shelter in 2022; and
- Have paid at least 30 per cent of their 2021 adjusted net family income on rent in the 2022 calendar year.
You also do not have to receive other housing benefits like the original Canada Housing Benefit.
Anyone interested in applying can log onto the CRA "My Account" or click here.
You can also apply over the phone by calling 1-800-282-8079.
Applications are open until March 31st, 2023.
The federal government estimates about 1.8 million Canadians will be eligible for this support.
