Niagara Region Transportation Director says the vendor will take them down Friday, working over a few days to do this
As of Friday, you'll see all speed cameras around the Niagara region come down, after the province voted to get rid of them.
The region's Director of Transportation Frank Tassone says no tickets have been issued over the last few days.
He adds they'll also deal with false claims, such as running cameras at night and tickets given at a km or 2 over the limit. "I think now that the program is going to cease, I think we can share with council that we only ran them for 6 hours a day... 2 hours in the morning, 2 hours at lunch, and 2 hours at the end of the day, which was very, very tight."
He adds there was a threshold of about 5kms over the limit before getting a ticket.
Councillor Haley Bateman says as a parent, she is appalled the cameras are going, especially since they have to cross a busy street for school.
She adds it's an east/west road, with the sun getting in the way. "Now that there's the time change, it's right in the drivers' eyes. There was a person driving a truck, not so long ago, who was going so fast that he knocked down the street light when he couldn't make that slight bend."
The region says it's evaluating how it'll handle school and other safety zones.
