City council leaving it open to volunteers, similar to what is in Mississauga
The City of St. Catharines is looking for anyone who wants to take up planting and maintaining boulevards.
Council voted not to go ahead with the Blooming Boulevards Program, at this time, choosing not to burden staff.
Councillor Mark Stevens spoke to the height of plants allowed, the city allows one metre. "Because we get complaints if someone's grass is 8-inches tall, and there will be a problem when backing out of a driveway, with people walking on sidewalks, and if anything is too high, that's an issue."
Resident Jeff Hurst says in the downtown people ignore that one metre by-law all the time.
Mayor Mat Siscoe spoke to the program that's similar to what's in Mississauga. "This isn't something that staff would necessarily take on, in Mississauga, it's very much volunteer driven. Council left the door open, if we have a motivated group of volunteers that wanted to take this on, we'll revisit it... there are some costs."
The mayor has spoken with the Horticultural Society and other groups.
