City's mayor says he is ready to help Niagara Falls and Fort Erie, if need be
The Mayor of St. Catharines is aware the majority of focus is on Niagara Falls and Fort Erie with today's solar eclipse.
Mat Siscoe tells us aside from a few eclipse activities at Niagara College and Brock University, he's prepared for a few people to show up in the city.
"I've, sort of, recommended at city hall if people can work remotely on Monday, that's great. We have a city council meeting on Monday night, and I know a number of councillors have decided they are going to stay virtual, so it'll probably be more of a low-key council meeting."
The mayor adds St. Catharines is ready to help his neighbours today if the need arises, as they would under any circumstance.
With the large number of people expected today, he adds every precaution is being taken.
They've spoken to Niagara regional police about possible problems, including rumours of certain groups planning protests. "I said we just need to be aware of this. Because it seems like an especially terrible day to be protesting the carbon tax, or things that are going on in the Middle East.... given everything else that's going to be happening on Monday, it doesn't strike me to be the best time to be protesting."
As for people arriving for the eclipse, the mayor has heard hotels are booked up.
