Welland Canal opens on Thursday

Couple more days and you will start having to check the Welland Canal app on your phone, if your travelling through Nigara.

Today the Montreal to Lake Ontario section of the seaway opens at 8:00 this morning.

Both the cities of Port Colborne and St. Catharines will hold Top Hat ceremonies on Thursday morning to welcome the first downbound and upbound ships of the season to go through the Welland Canal.

Last year, more than 38 million tonnes of cargo was shipped through the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence Seaway system.
