Variety of reasons given by experts as Welland drops to 25%
The number of people bothering to vote in elections remains dismal, and appears to be getting worse.
Locally, according to the Review, Welland tanked out at 25 percent in Monday's municipal election, with Lincoln, St. Catharines and Niagara Falls a few points higher than that. All those numbers are roughly 10% less than four years ago.
Early indications from the Association of Municipalities of Ontario suggest turnout was just 36 per cent across the province.
In 2018, it was 38.3 per cent, which was among the lowest turnouts since 1982.
The reasons according to experts... voter fatigue after recent provincial and federal elections, non-competitive races and the non-partisan nature of local elections where voters have no political party to guide their decisions.
A Brock University professor recently admitted to our newsroom it's also lack of trust voters have for politicians and institutions.
