Former NHL player killed during a game in England
Hockey player Hayley Wickenheiser is calling for more neck protection in the sport, after a deadly incident involving a former NHL player.
Former Pittsburgh Penguin Adam Johnson died during a game in England on Saturday, after he took a skate blade to the neck.
She says the sport needs to mandate neck protection at all levels.
"I know it may not pass the 'cool' factor but it's time for mandatory neck protection at every level in hockey," she wrote in a statement on her X page. "The risk is far too great not to."
Currently, neck guards are not required in the NHL.
