We included the phone call in the story, listen to it for a better idea should it happen to you
A common scam police are tracking is fake phone calls from Bell, offering promotions.
Our newsroom received such a call recently, the criminal telling us for being a Bell customer we were receiving a discount for high bills.
"Today our company, Bell, is running a promotion for our senior loyal customers, who have been with our company for a long time. So, you are also one of them, you pay your bills on time, you never miss a payment, so that is why, sir, today your account is qualified to get a 40% discount on your regular monthly bill."
After the criminal asked for an email address, which we declined, we told him we weren't a customer, and were recording the call, once we knew it was a scam.
He quickly hung up.
