123 passengers on board
The Civil Aviation Administration of China says the China Eastern airline crash took place near the city of Wuzhou.
The flight was travelling from Kunming to the industrial centre of Guangzhou along the east coast.
There was no immediate word on numbers of dead and injured.
The plane was carrying 123 passengers and nine crew members.
CNN says satellite data from NASA shows a massive fire in the area where the plane went down.
