Federal government bypassing Parliament to impose a temporary ban on handguns imported into the country.
The federal government says Canada is planning to temporarily ban the import of handguns into the country, without approval from Parliament.
Public Safety Minister Marco Mendicino says the ban will take effect in two weeks.
It will will last until a permanent freeze is passed in Parliament and comes into effect.
In May, the federal government tabled gun control legislation that includes a national freeze on the importation, sale and transfer of handguns in Canada.
The legislation has yet to be passed.
The temporary ban will prevent businesses from importing handguns into Canada, with limited exceptions.
Foreign Affairs Minister Melanie Joly says she has the authority to ban any import or export permit in Canada.
