The City of St. Catharines will apply to be certified as a living wage employer.
At last night's council meeting, council unanimously approved submitting an application to the Ontario Living Wage Network.
The Network states that in Niagara, $18.12 an hour is considered a living wage.
By applying, the City is committing to pay all full-time, part-time and contract workers a living wage by December 31st, 2024.
Three tiers of living wage certification exist.
The City will start the program at the base "supporter" tier, where only full-time employees receive the living wage.
The "leader" level extends the living wage to all part-time employees, and at the "champion" tier, third parties who provide services in city facilities will receive the living wage.
The living wage is defined as the amount a worker needs to make per hour in order to cover basic expenses and have leftover money in their wallet.
