A sense of optimism from Fort Erie's mayor for local health care after meeting with Ontario's health minister recently at the AMO conference.
Wayne Redekop says they showed Sylvia Jones a plan for Douglas Memorial, which includes adding more beds, CT scanners and MRI machines.
They've also been talking to post-secondary schools about training people in the hospital. "I would like to think that there'd be an opportunity at some point for us to actually bring in medical residents, to work in the urgent care centre, and that would compliment our efforts to bring in physicians to work in the urgent care centre, and compliment our efforts with the Niagara Region's physician recruitment."
The mayor says the health minister was very interested in the proposal.
He added it makes sense Niagara Health would run this plan. "This may be an opportunity for Fort Erie to establish its own health care organization, which would then be responsible for ensuring that we have the services that we need, and the only question would be concerning how much money the provincial government would supply for funding."
He said this plan could save millions of dollars in patient wait times at other Niagara hospitals.
