Federal Government Announces First Step of Buyback Program for Firearms

The federal government signs a deal with a national gun industry organization to figure out how to compensate retailers who own weapons that are banned

Canada's Public Safety Minister says Ottawa has made a first step towards launching its firearms buyback program.

Marco Mendicino says the federal government has signed a contract with the Canadian Sporting Arms and Ammunition Association.

The deal will see the government work with businesses and retailers that hold large inventories of prohibited weapons.

The buyback program is expected to start later this year.

However, the association says it's skeptical of the program because it lacks an implementation process.
