Firefighters from across the region were called to the Welland landfill site last night
A massive wood pallet fire at Humberstone Landfill in Welland is under control.
Welland's acting Fire Chief Matt Richardson says multiple fire departments were called last night around 6.
For this interview, he was standing on top of a pile of wood 70 feet high, and described the once burning pile nearby. "150 to 200 feet wide pile of this wood, and about 80 feet high. So, it was a lot of fuel, and there was an enormous wood chip pile that our crews worked tirelessly to protect and make sure the fire didn't spread to that."
They don't know the cause yet, there were no injuries, and a shelter in place advisory for nearby residents is removed.
He gives lots of credit to neighbouring Niagara fire departments. "City of Niagara Falls, City of Thorold, Township of Wainfleet, City of Port Colborne, the Town of Pelham, the Town of Fort Erie, the Town of Lincoln...for assisting us and providing their tankers."
