The daunting task of tackling homelessness discussed Monday by a Fort Erie Community group.
Mayor Wayne Redekop hosted the gathering of roughly 50 community leaders and service providers, working to build on 6-months of research by a Brock University professor.
The mayor says there are homeless people in Fort Erie, some living n their cars, or couch surfers. "They don't have a place to live, so they stay with a friend for a period of time, then they stay with another friend, then another friend. They're not technically homeless in the sense that they have a roof over their head, but, on the other hand, they don't have a fixed place that they can call their home."
He says Dr. Joanne Heritz has interviewed homeless people, helping to form next steps in this plan.
The next steps include greater clarity of the problems faced by homeless people. "2nd, determine the range of resources to address the issue. Three, seek greater local collaboration and coordination among the groups that are working in that space, 4th, engage the region for greater involvement and funding."
He acknowledges the current economic climate is not helping.
