Councillor George McDermott suggested the meeting with Niagara Health, saying he'd back the mayor, as did his colleagues
A Fort Erie councillor has pledged to the mayor that he and his colleagues will back the mayor in meeting Niagara Health to discuss keeping the Douglas Memorial urgent care centre open, including after the South Niagara hospital opens.
George McDermott suggested the meeting, after two town representatives resigned from Niagara Health.
He said Niagara Health is breaking from its original plans. "But it means to be more helpful to have a formal discussion with the Niagara Health board, to revisit some of the history, the original hospital plans and the commitments that were made, and reiterate the need to maintain their original commitment to operate an urgent care centre."
Councillor Tom Lewis added this is a 20 year old issue.
He was not impressed with a recent town hall meeting with Niagara Health, in which he says many residents were not allowed to speak, and the meeting was scripted by Niagara Health. "I would like to know from Niagara Health how much cost savings have they seen, since they reduced the hours there, and where is the money gone, or what is the plan to use that money."
