It says this is due to concerns about public safety
Some major changes coming to provincial drug treatment centres, including the one in Niagara.
The government says so far it has invested almost $550-million into 28 HART hubs, which includes drug injection sites, but also supportive housing and recovery-focused services helping people to get off the drugs.
Due to local concerns over public safety from the injection sites at the Homelessness and Addiction Recovery Treatment centres, the government is stopping the funding at 7 of those sites after a 90 day transition period.
It adds the 90 day period is to give people struggling with addiction time to transition to other supports provided by the HART hub.
The government also states this action builds on prohibiting injection sites within 200 metres of schools and day-cares.
However, the oppostion NDP says supervised consumption sites save lives, full stop, giving people struggling with addiction a safe, monitored place to do so.
Removing them means more drug use and overdoses in public places.
