Tony Baldinelli made reference to the GM plant in St. Catharines
Niagara Falls Conservative MP says a government committee will be studying tariffs on cheap Chinese imports and EV parts.
Speaking in Ottawa, Tony Baldinelli tells us this was a Conservative motion that passed, and it'll require Liberal cabinet ministers to appear next month.
He referred to the GM plant in St. Catharines that has suffered. "GM had started, last year they announced they would be making EVs at that facility. They started to retool, took out the V6 line, 300 people on layoff... but they announced in June they'd be putting that investment on hold."
He questioned why the government appears to be waiting to act.
Bay of Quite MP Ryan Williams adds trade relations with the US are declining.
"Just last week the Americans announced they're almost going to double the softwood tariffs, on softwood lumber. That impacts a whole, huge industry as well. We're not seeing trade deals made, we're seeing a softening of trade relationships around the world, and this government is responsible."
