Niagara Falls Mayor Jim Diodati says Niagara's new dining restrictions have good intentions but there are too many negative ramifications.
He says there are many reasons why Regional Council is against them, adding limiting restaurant dining rooms to members of the same household won't eliminate the problem.
"People are going to gather where there is no contact tracing, where there is no masks, no distancing and no sanitizing like hotel rooms, like houses, people are going to get together in basements, and it's going to be way worse."
Diodati says we need to understand human nature.
"It's one thing to understand a petri dish and it's something to understand people and what they're going to do. We understand that by making things too restrictive you don't stop it you just move it somewhere else."
He says the measures will also lead to lying, adding lots of people decided to move back in with their parents during the pandemic and they may have not changed their legal address yet.
Diodati adds the measures will also put local restaurants out of business.
Niagara is the only Region in the province that has limited restaurant dining rooms to members of the same household.
Acting Medical Officer of Health Dr. Mustafa Hirji introduced the measures last week and it's ultimately up to him if the measures are rescinded or not.
