Mat Siscoe's State of the City outlined accomplishments and challenges, then he took questions

Housing, tariffs, addressing crime and the economy discussed in St. Catharines' Mayor Mat Siscoe's State of the City address this week.

Hosted by the Greater Niagara Chamber of Commerce, a video showed the many small business owners in the city.

He noted last year there were 600 new businesses that opened.  "At the same time, overall employment expanded, with total employment surpassing 70,000 jobs.  Growth was especially strong in key sectors that support community well-being and long-term resilience, including health care, construction, and professional services."

He added the city will do whatever it takes to help business owners.

Home construction the first topic the mayor focused on, pointing out in the first 6 months of this term, council set a goal of 11,000 units over 10-years.

He added last year housing permits exceeded target by 40%.  "Those approvals are translating into real results, with housing starts reaching 151% of the ten year average.  More than 5,000 units advanced last year through the site plan and zoning by-law amendment applications, more than I have seen in my 16-years at city hall."

He also spoke of dealing with US tariffs.
