MPP Appeals for Return to Negotiations

Jeff Burch says staff at Community Living Port Colborne striking over long hours

Niagara Centre's MPP is remaining stedfast in his support of striking workers at Community Living Port Colborne.

Jeff Burch tells us the main reason people have been walking the picket line for 2 weeks is working 36 hour shifts, with no one to relieve them.

He adds they don't feel safe caring for their disabled clients, and having no contract for a year, and no signs of returning to the bargaining table with management, doesn't help.

"This is the only one [care centre] that is having these kinds of issues with this kind of severity that would force me to go out on strike.  So, it's pretty obvious that this is a management problem," he says.

He adds it doesn't help the company is using temporary workers, or scabs, as he calls them.  "So there've been a number of incidents of folks driving over curbs, or trying to drive cars through or around the picket line.  Dangerous situations that are completely unacceptable."

Burch says the workers are very concerned for their clients on the inside, but also for the replacement workers who they say don't have the needed skill level for the job.
