Region told it needs 17,000 every five years until 2051
Niagara Regional Council has received some shocking numbers regarding Niagara's need for housing.
During last week's meeting, housing consultant Alex Morrison told council that in order to meet housing demand, the region will need about 298,600 new housing units by 2051, which is about 96,400 units over the current supply.
Morrison says this means the region will need about 17,000 new units every five years, covering all options such as short term emergency accommodation, affordable rental units, market rentals, community housing, market home ownership and affordable housing.
The Region says it's looking into ways to achieve that goal.
