Provincial government investing money for the addition of 50 beds
The Niagara Detention Centre in Thorold is expanding by 50 beds, part of a $180-million provincial investment.
Speakiing at the centre today, Solicitor-General Michael Kerzner added facilities in Sudbury and Milton are included in the plan.
Bird Construction will do the work starting next year, to include rehabilitation services for literacy programs, as well as jobs skills training.
He says people are fed up with violence, home invasions, and jewellery store robberies. "Appointing tough on crime judges, and justices of the peace, and continue to advocate on the federal government for meaningful bail reform. We need to lock up dangerous criminals."
He blamed the previous Liberal government for closing seven jails.
Speaking for correctional staff, Janet Laverty appreciated the new beds, but added more workers are needed. "The truth is, that we are responsible for our growing population within our institutions. These are individuals that the courts have determined are unsafe to be released into our communities. This growing workload, combined with the rising incidents of violence in institutions, is placing significant pressure on correctional staff."
