Niagara Falls Charging More to Complain

City council says too much money for frivolous claims

City of Niagara Falls making it tougher to file a complaint under the Integrity Commissioner by raising the fee to $1,000... it was $500.

Councillor Vince Kerrio's motion passed, he says to save taxpayers from certain individuals who have personal vandettas against certain councillors.

Councillor Mike Strange pointed to one person who's complained many times, losing every complaint.  "He has cost taxpayers over $177,000.  So, if someone wanted to do that and bankrupt the entire city, they could basically do that, it's ridiculous... it's a waste of staff time, it's a waste of the Integrity Commissioner's time, it's a waste of money."

Ontario's Ombudsman is against this, saying it creates barrier for people to complain.

Councillor Lori Lococo was against, as was Councillor Mona Patel, saying some people can't afford this.  "What I would like to suggest, maybe, a frequent flyer... with the small claims court, when you have more than 2 or 3 claims, they charge you more fees... maybe we can come up with a maximum yearly claim, I'm not sure how that works."

Councillor Vince Kerrio noted with municipal elections coming this year, complaints will come out of the woodwork.
