NRP says flooding season approaching
Over 800 Kashechewan evacuees from Northern Ontario are still in Niagara Falls.
They came here at the beginning of the year, after their community's water system failed, resulting in contaminated water.
NRP Chief Bill Fordy told the police services board meeting last week more could be coming. "We're also aware, and have advanced notice that we anticipate, potentially 3,000 evacuees from the Fort Albany area, as we start to enter into the flooding period for the year."
It is expected repairs to the Kashechewan reserve will be done in June.
He adds Winnipeg is taking people in, and believes Sudbury as well. "Thunder Bay is receiving people, I'm not sure about Toronto. It is not only us, but we are a heavy lifter. The question is why Niagara.... it's because of our many hotels, and proximity, and the community likes to come here."
He says the NRP is also working to solve criminal matters among the community that's staying in Niagara.
